De Ceuvel
De Ceuvel is a city playground for innovation, experimentation and creativity where we aim to make sustainability tangible, accessible and fun. We enjoy sharing our knowledge and hope that it will grow, spread and multiply. At De Ceuvel there is always something fun and quirky going on and everybody is welcome.
CLEAN TECH PLAYGROUND DE CEUVEL
De Ceuvel is a sustainable breeding ground for creative and social entrepreneurs at a former shipyard on the Van Hasselt canal in Amsterdam-Noord. In 2012, a group of architects submitted the winning plan for a competition by the municipality of Amsterdam. They were given the site on loan for 10 years.
Now it is a vibrant community of entrepreneurs and artists with a green heart, who have helped build their workplaces in Amsterdam’s first circular office park. The site contains creative workplaces, a cultural center around sustainability, a café-restaurant, spaces for rental and floating hotel.
On the former site we are realizing one of the most unique urban experiments in Europe. Old houseboats have been placed on the heavily polluted site with foundations and all, converted into sustainable workplaces and connected by a meandering jetty. Around the boats, soil-cleaning plants are given free rein to purify the contaminated soil. De Ceuvel is not only a ‘forbidden garden’ that is left cleaner after 10 years, but also a playground for sustainable techniques: by integrating sustainable technology, we provide as much as possible for our own electricity and process our own waste in innovative, new ways.
